The Facts About CPB and the Future of PBS

What happened to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)?

On January 5, 2026, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced it is dissolving following Congress’s decision to eliminate of federal funding for public media. CPB supported public media for more than 50 years, and its closure is a serious loss for communities nationwide—but it does not end public broadcasting.

Is PBS going away?

No. PBS is not going away. PBS, PBS KIDS, and local stations like New Hampshire PBS remain fully operational and committed to serving the public.

Is New Hampshire PBS going away?

No. New Hampshire PBS is here to stay. We will continue providing trusted programming, educational services, local storytelling and emergency services to communities across the Granite State and Northern New England.

How does this affect New Hampshire PBS?

The loss of CPB funding represents about 18% ($1.3 million) of our annual budget. We responded swiftly and responsibly—cutting non-essential expenses, PBS reduced its dues for this fiscal year, and we’re making no cuts to staff or local productions. This funding helped support PBS dues and national programming, local acquisitions and systemwide best practices in management, editorial standards and opportunities for innovation in content development and delivery.

How is New Hampshire PBS funded now?

New Hampshire PBS is now 100% community supported. Our future is powered by members, sponsors and partners who believe that public media is essential.

Why does public media still matter?

Public media has never been more essential. New Hampshire PBS delivers trusted information, educational content and local service without commercial or political influence. The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 remains law, and its mission—education, independence, localism and universal access—continues to guide everything we do.

How can I support New Hampshire PBS?

The most impactful way to help is to become a member or continue your support by becoming a corporate sponsor, donating and participating in our Winter and Spring online auctions, and attending events.  Your contribution keeps PBS trusted programming on the air, supports PBS KIDS, delivers local critical emergency information and provides access to PBS Passport with more than 6,000 hours of content.

You can also help by sharing the word: New Hampshire PBS is here to stay.

What does the future hold for New Hampshire PBS?

There is no doubt that there are challenges ahead, but we have every confidence that NHPBS will weather this storm and remain a trusted, valued and essential part of the local media landscape.
